Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Allentown, Georgia. Whether you need testing for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair analysis is unmatched. We offer testing locations nationwide, capable of conducting hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. Hair analysis is suitable for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized testing needs.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests are becoming more common in drug screening practices. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals favor this method over traditional urine tests. These tests are utilized by organizations with strict drug policies, courts, and those on probation. Hair testing offers a longer detection window—up to 90 days—using observed collection, reducing cheating chances. Yet, for recent use (within 5 days), urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair can chronicle prolonged alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. A sample taken near the scalp can offer a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and other substances. The simplicity of hair collection, along with its resistance to tampering and ease of transport, enhances its utility.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, containing roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, yields approximately 100mg of hair, which is ideal for analysis and verification. For tests involving EtG, additional substances, or more than 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. It's preferable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable quantity of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" pertains only to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, and so forth).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory process encompasses four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary integration of a sample into a lab’s operations. This stage involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent in an electronic custody chain system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for drug presence. Although Screening is a budget-friendly approach to exclude drug usage in most cases, court-acceptable results require that a positive screen undergo confirmation. Presumptively positive Screening samples must proceed to further confirmation.

For samples testing presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. This involves extracting drugs from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), presenting a distinct challenge within hair drug screening methodologies.

Positive screening outcomes undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. Presumptively positive samples are prepped by washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use spanning up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical insight: Offers a pattern of drug use over time, unlike tests that only verify recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair about 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur greater costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth differences can impact metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often labeled "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing with traditional urine tests in Allentown, GA, the advantages become apparent. Hair testing offers superior detection accuracy, capturing a broad spectrum of substances over time, unlike urine tests which only identify recent use. This reliability is essential for employers and organizations aiming for thorough drug screening without the limitations imposed by urine analysis.

Extended Detection Window

The hair follicle test features an extended detection window, significantly broader than most tests. In Allentown, GA, this method can reflect substance use for up to 90 days, allowing employers to gain a comprehensive view of an individual's history. This extended period offers a significant advantage by providing a clearer, more detailed account of drug use, compared with traditional testing methods that offer limited timelines.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests are notably tamper-resistant, offering a decisive advantage over other testing methods in Allentown, GA. By using hair samples that are much harder to alter than urine samples, this method ensures reliable results. Such tests minimize the risk of sample manipulation, providing a trustworthy assessment of substance use that stands up to scrutiny and maintains test integrity.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
