Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Alto, Georgia. For individuals needing a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with locations in every city Nationwide equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair can be assessed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing services.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent testing method. Many employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer a hair drug test over the traditional urine analysis. Employers with strict no-drug-use policies, along with courts and individuals on probation, utilize hair drug tests. The key advantage is a significantly extended detection window, often up to 90 days, with a supervised collection process, making it almost foolproof. But for drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands encapsulate markers of alcohol and drugs over time, offering a comprehensive history of use. When collected proximally to the scalp, hair can provide an approximate 90-day detection period for alcohol and drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, it is moderately resilient to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch lock consisting of around 200 hairs (roughly the circumference of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for initial screening and verification. For EtG, additional services, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest determining the specimen's weight with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is missing, a corresponding quantity of body hair can be used. Head hair references are exclusive to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The drug testing process in a lab comprises four major stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the first stage, where a sample is integrated into the lab's framework. This process confirms the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening offers an economical means to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result in this phase demands subsequent confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require further verification.

Should a sample suggest a positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. At this stage, substances are extracted from hair at a considerably reduced concentration compared to other tests (e.g., urine or oral fluid), reflecting the complexity of hair drug tests.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug consumption for up to three months, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Resistance to compromise: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing the accuracy of outcomes.
  • Historical usage data: It reveals patterns of drug consumption over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection of recent usage: It typically takes 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the presence of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair itself rather than the follicle beneath the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Alto, GA, vastly outperforms urine-based methods, offering superior detection accuracy and reliability.

Unlike urine tests, hair analysis can reveal substance use over a much longer period, detecting a broader range of drugs.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
