Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Arco, Georgia. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol examination, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled. Accredited Drug Testing boasts testing centers across the Nation, all capable of performing hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair analysis can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence in recent times, often preferred over traditional urine tests. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors frequently opt for these tests, especially in environments with zero-tolerance policies. Hair tests offer an extended detection window, identifying drug use up to 90 days. This process is observed, reducing chances of evasion. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has emerged as an effective method for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug consumption by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. By collecting hair close to the scalp, it allows for a detection window of nearly three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A sample consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximating the thickness of a #2 pencil) from a 1.5-inch section near the scalp gives about 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For tests such as EtG, extended panels, or tests surpassing 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measurement. If scalp hair can't be obtained, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses other hair types (facial, axillary, and so forth).

Process Overview

The laboratory stages for processing a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is incorporated into a lab system. This process involves verifying the correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning it a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handling any additional data entry that an electronic chain of custody might not cover.

Screening serves as a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening efficiently eliminates the majority of drug use samples through cost-effective methods, any positive findings require confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples regarded as presumptively positive in Screening must undergo a subsequent confirmation.

When a sample tests positive at the Screening phase, more hair from the original sample is processed for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower levels than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of a positive screen involves GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. Every process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests cover a shorter time frame.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are hard to falsify, ensuring more precise results.
  • Provides historical data: It can illustrate a habitual pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become identifiable in hair about 5-7 days after use.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing is usually pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth disparities can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although sometimes called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
