Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Armuchee, Georgia. If a hair or alcohol screening is required, our specialty lies in hair testing, with facilities available in every city across the nation to conduct these exams. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on your head or body is needed. Our tests can specifically check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In the last few years, hair follicle drug assessments have become a more prevalent method of conducting drug tests. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair analysis instead of the conventional urine test. Companies with strict no-drug policies, courts, and people on probation utilize these tests. The primary advantage is the extended detection timeframe, typically up to 90 days, inherently secure collection methods, and minimal risk of tampering. Nonetheless, for substance use within a five-day window, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an influential method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and various drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When gathered from near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample, consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will provide 100mg of hair, an ideal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not an option, a similar quantity of body hair may be collected. When we mention head hair, it refers specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This involves ensuring the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening refers to an initial rapid evaluation for drug abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage on the majority of samples, a positive screen must be validated to be used as evidence in legal proceedings. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample appears presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration when compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation, as needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: It is highly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, leading to more accurate outcomes.
  • Provides usage patterns: It offers a timeline of drug use over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests generally cost more compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Aspects such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth might influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle tests to urine tests in Armuchee, GA, the former offer a clear advantage. Hair testing's detection precision outstrips that of urine testing, providing a reliable picture of substance use history, which is crucial for employers facing delicate situations.

Reliability and accuracy define hair tests more than traditional urine methodologies. While urine tests capture drug use over a short span, hair evaluations present an extensive detection scope, pivotal for long-term assessment of employee substance habits.

Extended Detection Window

In Armuchee, GA, hair follicle testing triumphs with its extensive detection window, surveying drug use over a 90-day period. This broad timeframe offers employers a wide spectrum on an individual's history of substance use, crucially informing employment-related decisions.

This comprehensive analysis allows for a thorough understanding of any applicant or employee, not just a snapshot of recent behavior. This depth of insight enables companies to make well-founded choices regarding the employment and integrity of their workforce.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
