Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Ashburn, Georgia. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, we specialize in hair analysis with testing centers across all cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body are required. Hair testing can detect the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other specialized testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over the standard urine tests. Those with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationers frequently use hair follicle testing. Its primary advantage is a prolonged detection period of drug use—up to 90 days—collected through an observed procedure, making it nearly foolproof. However, urine tests continue to be more accurate for screening recent use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Through the evolution of drug detection methods, hair analysis has emerged as an effective approach for uncovering alcohol and drug consumption. Hair retains a chronicled record of drugs and alcohol by encasing biomarkers within the growing hair fibers. When sampled near the scalp, hair provides a detection span reaching up to 90 days for substances. The collection process for hair is straightforward, challenging to falsify, and simple to transport.

A strand segment measuring 1.5 inches and comprising roughly 200 hairs (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp extracts about 100mg, forming the optimal batch for both screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, it's suggested to gather 150mg of the sample. Employ a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a similar quantity of body hair could be utilized. By head hair, the reference is to scalp hair solely, whereas body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory evaluation of a drug test result involves four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial conversion of a specimen into the laboratory framework. This process includes confirming the proper sealing and dispatching of the sample, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any additional information not submitted through an electronic chain of custody.

Screening constitutes a preliminary swift assessment for potential drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient strategy for negating drug usage across most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to qualify for courtroom validity. Presumptively positive samples in Screening must undergo a secondary validation.

Upon identifying a presumptive positive result during Screening, a further hair portion is taken from the original sample to prepare for Extraction. This phase involves isolating drugs from the hair at far lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Verification of any positive results from screening is conducted with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. Prior to confirmation, all anticipated positive samples undergo washing if needed. The entire laboratory protocol, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug consumption within a 90-day window, in contrast to urine assessments which offer shorter detection periods.
  • Challenging to deceive: It's notably arduous to manipulate a hair drug test, heightening the result's reliability.
  • Delivers historical insights: It offers a chronological usage pattern over time, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs become recognizable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs compared to other types.
  • Result fluctuations: Aspects such as hair pigmentation and individual hair growth idiosyncrasies influence drug metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the procedure evaluates the hair strands and not the follicles beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
