Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Atlanta, Georgia. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol exam, Accredited specializes in this form of testing and maintains testing locations across the country capable of conducting hair analyses. Normally, possessing 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body suffices. These tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing preferences.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common option for drug assessments. Many workplaces, courts, and substance abuse specialists prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers enforcing strict drug-free mandates, judicial systems, and probationary checks. The key advantage of hair drug tests is their extended detection duration of up to 90 days, with a secure collection process that's challenging to manipulate. Nevertheless, for detecting drug use in the preceding five days, urine tests offer the highest precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a vital method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended history of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers in the strands of developing hair. When obtained near the scalp, it can reveal alcohol and drug use within about a 3-month period. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to alter, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the area closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both initial and confirmatory testing. For EtG, enhancements, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is missing, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the lab processing of drug test outcomes: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into the laboratory’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and carrying out any additional data input not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-efficient approach to excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to hold up in legal proceedings. Samples that show a presumptive positive result in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample yields a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are recovered from hair at a much reduced concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. Each stage from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation per ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that have a shorter detection range.
  • Hard to circumvent: It is extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, thus ensuring more reliable results.
  • Supplies historical insight: It can depict a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistencies in outcomes: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites found in hair.

Note: Often named "hair follicle tests," this test examines the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
