Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Avalon, Georgia. Whether you require a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair analysis, with facilities across all cities in the nation capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body areas suffices for testing. Analysis options include screenings for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair evaluations.

The use of hair follicle drug testing has gained traction recently, replacing conventional urine tests. Employers, legal entities, and addiction specialists now favor hair drug tests. These tests appeal to organizations enforcing strict anti-drug policies, as well as judicial systems and parole officers. Their superior detection range, which extends up to 90 days, observed collection procedures, and difficulty to compromise are notable advantages. Conversely, urine tests still hold their accuracy edge for verdicts under five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair, it records long-term substance use. If collected close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to 3 months for both alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, it's relatively hard to tamper with, and the samples can be conveniently shipped.

A sample of 1.5 inches containing approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) when taken closest to the scalp will yield 100mg, the ideal quantity for both initial and confirmatory tests. For EtG inserts, and/or testing exceeding 10 panels, a specimen amounting to 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen is advisable. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When we say head hair, it refers specifically to scalp hair. All other hair types (like facial, axillary, etc.) are considered body hair.

Process Overview

The process of laboratory analysis of a drug test result comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the beginning of processing a sample into a lab's system. This step involves checking that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any requisite data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. While it offers a cost-efficient method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive result from Screening needs to be corroborated for court admissibility. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the primary specimen and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are separated from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other procedures (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug tests are deemed among the most challenging to conduct.

Any positive findings from Screening are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, every presumptive positive sample is washed if needed. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests that offer a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely tough, thus providing more reliable results.
  • Offers usage patterns: It presents a history of drug use across a period, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs only become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier compared to other testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself and not the hair follicle located beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Avalon, GA, hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing due to its superior accuracy and reliability. Hair tests are less susceptible to contamination or adulteration, ensuring genuine results. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair analysis is not easily manipulated, providing a trustworthy detection method.

The advantage of hair follicle tests lies in their extended analysis timeframe. While urine tests can only track recent substance use, hair tests cover a window of up to 90 days, offering more comprehensive insights into an individual's habits. Employers benefit from a deeper understanding of potential hires with hair testing.

Extended Detection Window

In Avalon, GA, hair follicle drug testing allows for an extensive insight into substance use history, offering detection up to 90 days back. This extended window surpasses other methods, such as urine tests, which are only effective for recent use. For employers, this offers a more thorough understanding of an individual's substance use over time.

By capturing a longer snapshot of drug use, hair testing provides a comprehensive view into past behavior. Avalon employers can depend on this method to gain better clarity on an applicant or employee's substance history, aiding in informed decision-making processes.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Avalon, GA, hair follicle testing stands out as a tamper-resistant method, offering unmistakable accuracy. The collection process for hair samples is under supervision, eliminating opportunities for sample adulteration or substitution, which are common issues with other methods like urine testing.

This robust defense against tampering makes hair tests a reliable option for ensuring test integrity. The confirmed reliability provides peace of mind, assuring employers that test results genuinely reflect the individual’s substance use, free from external manipulation.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
