Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Between, Georgia. For those needing hair drug or alcohol evaluations, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in this field, with facilities across the United States skilled in hair assessments. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body is typically necessary. Hair samples can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for other specific analyses.

In recent times, the preference for drug screening has increasingly turned to hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine samples. Hair follicle tests serve businesses with strict anti-drug policies, judicial systems, and probationary procedures. Their advantage lies in a broader detection span, approximately 90 days, with a monitored collection process, thwarting any form of deceit. However, for identifying recent drug usage within a five-day timeframe, urine tests remain the more reliable option.

What it is, How it works

Regarded as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing offers insight into long-term substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of developing hair strands. When sourced from close to the scalp, hair can deliver up to a three-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp supplies 100mg of hair, which is the optimum sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and/or tests involving more than 10 panels, it is advised to obtain 150mg of the sample. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. In cases where scalp hair is not present, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Conversely, body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial or underarm hair).

Summary of the Process

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory’s framework. This phase includes confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any further data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary quick assessment to check for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to determine drug usage in most samples, a positive finding necessitates confirmation for it to be permissible in legal settings. Any samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening require additional confirmation.

Should a sample be indicated as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves isolating drugs from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Presumptively positive samples are rinsed prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is considerably challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the outcome.
  • Offers historical information: This test can reveal a history of drug usage over time, rather than just recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Unable to detect recent drug use: It generally takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug residues detected in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
