Branchville, Georgia benefits from Accredited Drug Testing's comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services. Whether for drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise lies in hair tests, accessible in various cities nationwide. Typically, hair from the crown, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, or body hair can be evaluated. Tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other bespoke hair testing options.

There has been a shift towards hair follicle drug testing in recent years. It's now preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over traditional urine testing. Hair tests are crucial for employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation. The advantage lies in its extended detection range of up to 90 days, making manipulation nearly unfeasible. However, urine tests remain accurate for drug use detection within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now esteemed as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended historical record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal up to about a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. Use a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen. If scalp hair is not an option, an equivalent amount of body hair can be taken. Head hair refers solely to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other varieties (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's system, verifying the sample's seal and proper shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entries not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use among most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally acceptable. Any samples that test presumptively positive in the Screening phase need a subsequential confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are retrieved from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most complex methodologies.

Confirmation of positive screenings is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples identified as presumptively positive are cleaned before confirmation when necessary. From Accessioning through Confirmation, the entire lab process is evaluated in accordance with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and certified to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Lengthy detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests that have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Due to its complexity, cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical insight: It reveals patterns of drug use over an extended period, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become visible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often incur higher costs compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result differences: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite the common reference as "hair follicle tests," the test analyzes the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing against traditional urine tests in Branchville, GA, hair samples provide a broader detection span. They offer enhanced detection accuracy and reliability, making them the preferred choice for stringent testing requirements.

Hair drug tests are exemplary in identifying substance history over extended periods, surpassing the typical domain of urine tests. This improved detection capacity ensures more conclusive results.

Extended Detection Window

A defining feature of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window, capturing drug usage over a duration of up to 90 days. This prolonged period offers employers in Branchville, GA comprehensive insight into an individual’s substance usage history.

This extensive detection capability allows organizations to make informed decisions about potential and current employees, ensuring a safer and drug-free workplace environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The tamper-resistant quality of hair follicle tests is a key advantage, highly minimizing the chances of sample adulteration. This promotes trust in Branchville, GA as results are reliable and not easily questioned.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
