Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Broad River, Georgia. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair testing and operates testing centers in numerous cities across the country to facilitate your hair test needs. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown of the head, or body hair in some instances, is typically required. Hair tests may include analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, alongside other tailored testing options.

In the past few years, the preference for hair follicle drug tests in drug assessments has surged. Increasingly, employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals opt for hair drug tests over conventional urine examinations. Hair follicle tests are preferred by organizations enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, judiciary bodies, and individuals undergoing probation. The main advantage of a hair follicle test is its extended drug use detection window, up to 90 days, conducted under observation, making cheating nearly impossible. However, for screening drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a potent means for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a lengthy history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp results in 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample size for both screening and confirmation purposes. For tests exceeding 10 panels, including EtG and add-ons, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. 'Head hair' pertains specifically to scalp hair, while 'body hair' encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is first processed into the laboratory's system. This step includes confirming the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial quick test for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is cost-effective for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any sample yielding a presumptive positive result in Screening necessitates a follow-up confirmation.

For samples that are presumptively positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are removed from the hair at a significantly reduced concentration compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluids), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if required. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard as well as the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection window of urine tests.
  • Harder to manipulate: Tampering with a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a pattern of substance use over time rather than solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs require about 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other methods of drug testing.
  • Result variations: Hair color and personalized differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
