Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Brookfield, Georgia. If you require hair drug or alcohol testing, our specialty lies in hair testing, accessible through our centers across all U.S. cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or other body areas may be required. Hair samples can be analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized testing.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more common for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists often opt for hair tests over urine tests. Such tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, the judiciary, and probation officers. Hair tests boast a longer detection window, up to 90 days, ensuring difficulty in cheating. Nevertheless, urine tests are still preferred for recent drug use detection within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is generally recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged usage history of substances by embedding biomarkers in the growing hair strands. When taken from near the scalp, hair can serve as an indicator for up to a 3-month period for alcohol and drug detection. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, extended screenings, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advised. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for obtaining the specimen weight. Should scalp hair not be available, an equivalent volume of body hair is suitable. Note that head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test outcome involves four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the entry-level processing of a sample within the laboratory's system. This step ensures that the sample was adequately sealed and delivered, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening denotes an initial cursory scan for illicit substances. While Screening serves as an economical method to exclude drug presence in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples indicating a presumptive positive from Screening require further confirmation.

In instances where a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at concentrations lower than alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging to execute.

Verification of any presumptive positive from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo a cleansing process prior to confirmation as needed. The full laboratory procedure spans Accessioning to Confirmation and is assessed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair credential and accreditation compliant with ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can expose drug usage up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a shorter detection window.
  • Challenging to falsify results: The possibility of cheating a hair drug test is minimal, which enhances the accuracy of results.
  • Offers longitudinal data: It can illustrate a pattern of substance use over a duration, not just immediate past consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lacks detection of recent usage: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing techniques.
  • Outcome variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
