Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Brooks, Georgia. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with nationwide centers ready to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be tested. These hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more frequent method for drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer these tests over the standard urine tests. They are ideal for zero-tolerance employers, courts, and those on probation. The notable advantage is the extended 90-day window for detecting drug use, collected under supervision, making it hard to tamper. However, urine tests are preferred for detecting recent usage within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the emerging hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can deliver a detection window for alcohol and other drugs extending up to roughly 3 months. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to deliver.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 strands of hair (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be utilized. Referring to head hair implies scalp hair specifically. Body hair denotes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial steps of integrating a sample into a laboratory’s system. This includes confirming that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not offered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises a preliminary swift examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be legally acceptable. Samples identified as presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, substances are extracted from hair at substantially lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests provide a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: It's very challenging to deceive a hair drug test, leading to more precise results.
  • Provides historical insights: It delivers a pattern of drug use over time, rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Can't detect recent usage: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
