Offering a comprehensive hair follicle drug testing service in Buena Vista, Georgia, Accredited Drug Testing caters to those in need of a quick, reliable hair test for drugs or alcohol. Our expertise in hair testing is matched by a network of national testing centers ready to facilitate these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the head or body, permitting analysis for alcohol/ETG, drugs, or optional customizations.

Recently, hair follicle testing is being chosen more often for drug screening, replacing the traditional urine tests. Employers adhering to strict no-drug policies, legal courts, and substance misuse specialists now prefer hair testing due to its extensive detection window and authenticity. Its chief advantage lies in the longer detection time frame of up to 90 days, rendering it fraud-resistant, especially when compared to urine tests that remain most reliable for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessment has been recognized as a potent mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol usage. By encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows, hair delivers an extended history of alcohol and drug exposure. When procured from near the scalp, hair can reveal a nearly three-month detection window for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

An approximately 1.5-inch sample comprising around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness), taken closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both initial screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, supplementary tests, or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to collect 150mg of the specimen. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for accuracy in weighing the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. Head hair refers specifically to scalp hair, while body hair applies to all other hair types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The primary stages in laboratory processing of a drug test result consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

The Accessioning phase includes the initial entry of a sample into the lab's system, ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drug abuse substances. While it's an economical approach to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated for legal acceptability. Any samples with a presumptive positive result during Screening require an additional confirmation step.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction stage. During this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than alternative methodologies such as urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening one of the most complex methods to execute.

Positive screening results are confirmed through techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptive positive undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a briefer detection period.
  • High resistance to manipulation: It is exceptionally challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, thus ensuring accuracy in results.
  • Historical use patterns: It can reveal consistent drug usage patterns over time, rather than merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detection of drugs in hair typically takes about 5-7 days after use.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests are more costly compared to alternative drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", this assessment examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
