In Carl, Georgia, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. For those needing tests for drugs or alcohol, our hair testing proficiency includes facilities across the nation. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, whether from your head or body, is typically required. Hair analyses can check for substances, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored to meet specific testing needs.

Recently, there has been a notable shift towards hair follicle drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly prefer it over conventional urine screening. It is favored by zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and probation officers. A significant advantage is its extended detection period, reaching up to 90 days, with sample collection under observation, making it almost tamper-proof. However, urine tests remain superior for detecting very recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Through the entrapment of biomarkers within a hair strand's growing fibers, hair retains an extended record of substance use. When hair is cut close to the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol intake for a period of up to three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, it's relatively tamper-resistant, and transportable.

Gathering a 1.5-inch sample of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or panels that exceed 10, a sample size of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample is recommended. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. The term 'head hair' specifically refers to scalp hair, while 'body hair' encompasses other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The core components of lab processing for drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with integrating a sample into the laboratory's framework. This encompasses ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, issuing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering additional data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drug usage. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method for eliminating drug usage across most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening mandate a secondary verification.

When a sample indicates a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples indicating presumptive positivity are cleansed before confirmation as required. The overall lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a briefer detection span.
  • Resistance to manipulation: The probability of falsifying a hair drug test is minimal, enhancing accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over a timeframe, rather than just immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the procedure analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
