Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug evaluations in Catoosa Springs, Georgia. Should you require a hair-related drug or alcohol test, our expertise is in hair examination, with testing facilities located throughout all cities Nationwide for your convenience. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body are sufficient for most cases. Hair tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific hair test preferences.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle drug evaluations. This test is now a requirement by many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals in place of the conventional urine test. Hair follicle tests support zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation programs. They offer a key advantage of an extended detection timeline for drug usage, usually up to 90 days, during a supervised collection process that is nearly foolproof. Nonetheless, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, the urine test remains the best choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a strong method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. This technique provides an extended overview of alcohol and drug use because hair fibers trap biomarkers during growth. When cut near the scalp, hair offers up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. It is effortless to gather, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches comprising about 200 strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields roughly 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, additional tests, or those beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is ideal. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is advised. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. ‘Head hair’ refers specifically to scalp hair, whereas ‘body hair’ includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample's initial introduction to the lab system. This step ensures the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any electronic chain of custody gaps.

Screening serves as the initial quick evaluation for drug abuse. While it’s a cost-efficient method to negate drug use in most cases, a positive screen must be verified for court admissibility. All samples showing positive signs in Screening require confirmatory testing.

For samples showing potential positive results in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction step. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), which makes hair drug analysis particularly challenging.

The confirmation of positive screening results is accomplished through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Any samples with preliminary positive findings are washed before confirmation. The full lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to review under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, surpassing urine tests with their shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test proves challenging, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Shows usage history: Establishes a pattern of drug use over time instead of just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot determine recent use: Drugs become visible in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Though sometimes termed as "hair follicle tests", these tests examine the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Catoosa Springs, GA
The advantages of hair testing over urine tests include its superior detection capability and reliability. While urine tests serve their purposes, hair testing offers a more extensive examination, preventing manipulation and ensuring accurate detection over a substantial timeframe, thus providing employers with a more complete picture.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
