Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Cecil, Georgia. If a hair drug or alcohol assessment is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair testing. We operate across numerous cities nationwide with facilities fully capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be customized for specific needs.

In recent trends, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for substance testing. Employers, the court system, and substance abuse experts are choosing hair testing over traditional urine tests. Hair testing is favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, judges, and those on probation. Its extended detection time, up to 90 days, collected under supervision, makes it tamper-resistant. Urine tests remain most effective for recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand, hair records a comprehensive history of alcohol and drugs use. When gathered near the scalp, it offers a detection span of up to roughly 90 days for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for shipping.

A batch of hair measuring 1.5 inches from the scalp, comprising about 200 strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil), provides 100mg—an ideal quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, additional elements, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is suggested. If head hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. In reference to head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair denotes all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in laboratory processing for drug testing results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the introductory processing of a sample into the laboratory system. It involves checking that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid test for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers an economical method to discard drug usage in the majority of samples, any positive outcome needs confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that yield a presumptive positive result in Screening require additional confirmation.

If Screening designates a sample as presumptively positive, further hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. This stage involves removing drugs from hair at substantially lower concentrations compared to other methods—such as urine or oral fluid—which explains why hair drug screening is among the most complex methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that presumptively test positive undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug consumption for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection timeline.
  • Increased difficulty of tampering: The reliability of hair drug tests makes it challenging to manipulate the results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can demonstrate a pattern of drug use over time, beyond recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Varied results: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
