In Chattahoochee Hills, Georgia, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug analysis. Whether seeking alcohol or drug testing, our centers are strategically located across the nation to conduct hair tests efficiently. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body, our tests can identify alcohol, drugs, or other specific substances.

Recently, the prevalence of hair follicle testing has surged among employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals who prefer it over urine analysis. It's favored by entities enforcing strict drug policies and for monitoring probationers. The key advantage of hair testing is its extended detection span of up to 90 days, with an observation process that minimizes chances of manipulation. However, for detecting recent drug consumption within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent means for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair holds a long-standing record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands of maturing hair. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reveal up to around a three-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to procure, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The quartet of principal steps in the laboratory handling of a drug test result encompasses Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial processing of a specimen into a laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample was accurately sealed and mailed, a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) is allocated, and any further data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system is completed.

Screening provides a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly strategy to exclude drug usage in most specimens, a positive result must be validated to have legal admissibility. Any specimens that are preliminarily positive in Screening do require further confirmation.

If a sample is preliminarily positive during the Screening step, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methodologies (for example, urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Verification of any positive Screen findings is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All preliminary positive samples are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug examinations can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests that possess a more restricted detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: It is notably challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage history: It offers insight into a pattern of drug use over time, extending beyond recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Lacks detection of recent use: It generally requires 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations usually cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites present in the hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test actually evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why choose hair follicle testing over urine testing in Chattahoochee Hills, GA? Hair testing offers superior detection accuracy and reliability. Compared to traditional urine tests, hair tests provide a more comprehensive analysis of drug use, capturing a wider timeframe and reducing the risk of inaccurate results.

The benefits of hair follicle testing outweigh those of urine tests due to its longer detection period and resistance to tampering, ensuring results are trustworthy and reflective of an individual's past drug use.

Extended Detection Window

In Chattahoochee Hills, GA, the extended detection window of hair follicle testing is a key advantage. Unlike other methods, it can track drug use over a 90-day period, offering a comprehensive view of a person's substance history. This extended detection time provides employers with vital insights.

Hair follicle testing allows for a more thorough assessment of whether an individual has been using substances over several months. This long-term view is invaluable in evaluating an applicant or employee's drug usage patterns.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Chattahoochee Hills, GA, offer a tamper-resistant testing method. This tests reduce the risk of sample adulteration significantly, providing reliable and unquestionable results that stakeholders can trust.

Unlike traditional tests, hair follicle testing ensures integrity and authenticity of the samples collected. Its observed collection process virtually eliminates the possibility of cheating, securing the validity of the test outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
