Accredited Drug Testing provides all-inclusive hair follicle drug screening services in Chauncey, Georgia. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we excel in hair testing with facilities located nationwide, ready to conduct these tests. Typically, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair testing options can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized analytes.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now opt for hair tests over typical urine tests. These tests are vital for employers requiring drug-free workplaces, legal systems, and probationary settings, offering the advantage of a wider detection timeframe, usually up to 90 days, with an observed collection making them tamper-proof. Yet, urine tests remain most precise for detecting recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have gained recognition as a compelling method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-range record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When acquired near the scalp, hair can offer about a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, comparatively hard to tamper, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands (resembling the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, meeting the optimal sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, it is advised to gather 150mg of the sample. Utilizing a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample is suggested. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair might be gathered. By head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps entailed in the laboratory analysis of a drug test sample include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary handling of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. It ensures that the sample was securely sealed and dispatched correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplemental data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid examination for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage for the majority of samples, a positive screening result requires confirmation to be accepted in legal proceedings. Any samples rendering presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate a secondary verification.

In cases where a sample shows a presumptively positive result during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Here, substances are retrieved from hair at notably lower concentrations than those in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug analysis the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of a positive Screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples with presumptive positives undergo a wash before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair authorization and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can identify substance use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is notably challenging, therefore enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can illustrate a pattern of substance use over time, not merely recent ingestion.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent ingestion: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are generally pricier than other substance testing approaches.
  • Outcome variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is carried out on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
