Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests across Chicopee, Georgia. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in providing these tests, with facilities available in all U.S. cities that facilitate hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the scalp or body for analysis. Hair tests can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing needs.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly adopted hair follicle testing. Numerous employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists now favor this over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests support employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation. The key advantage of hair testing is its extended detection timeline, often covering up to 90 days, with supervised collection making alteration nearly impossible. However, urine tests maintain their accuracy for detecting recent drug use within the preceding 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a significant option for identifying drug and alcohol usage. It offers an extended retrospective examination of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers in the strands of hair as they grow. When sourced near the scalp, hair can indicate the presence of alcohol and drugs for roughly up to a 3-month period. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (resembling the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It’s suggested to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be collected, an equivalent quantity of body hair is usable. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair pertains to any other hair types (e.g., facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The process for determining a drug test outcome in a lab includes Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s system, which encompasses verifying that the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial, swift evaluation for drug abuse, serving as an economical method to dismiss drug usage for the majority of samples; however, a positive outcome needs confirmation to be valid legally. Samples that are tentatively positive in the Screening require an additional verification.

Should a sample be temperately positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the primary sample for Extraction. This process extracts drugs from hair at significantly reduced concentrations in comparison to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluids), which underscores the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Confirmation of any tentative Screening positive is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessitated. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is vetted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection scope: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for a period extending up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a more limited detection period.
  • Minimal cheating potential: Manipulating the outcome of a hair drug test is notably challenging, thus enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical usage details: It’s capable of revealing a pattern of substance usage over time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: A period of about 5-7 days is needed for drugs to become apparent in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth disparities can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test itself evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
