Accredited Drug Testing offers diverse hair follicle drug testing services in Cohutta, Georgia. For individuals requiring a hair drug or alcohol screening, we excel in hair assessments with facilities in cities Nationwide. Hair samples from 1.5 to 2 inches on the crown or body are typically needed. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG or provide custom hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become more common in drug testing protocols. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. This method benefits entities with zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and supervised individuals by offering detection up to 90 days, nearly impossible to manipulate. Yet, for capturing recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for detecting drugs and alcohol. Hair offers an extended record of substance use by capturing biomarkers in the strands as they grow. When cut near the scalp, hair can indicate usage within a roughly 3-month frame for both alcohol and drugs. It is easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and simple to send.

A sample of 1.5 inches, approximately 200 hairs (similar to a #2 pencil thickness) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or more than 10-panel tests, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair categorizes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four key stages in the lab processing for a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves entering a sample into the lab's system initially. This step verifies that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any other data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary check for substance use. Although Screening is efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, any positive result from this step must be confirmed to be court-admissible. Samples with presumed positives from Screening will need further verification.

Should Screening suggest a positive result, more hair is taken from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this step, substances are taken out of the hair at a considerably lower concentration than through other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly complex.

Confirmation of any positive findings from Screening is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples with presumed positive results are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed according to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests reveal up to 90 days of drug use, unlike urine tests with shorter detection times.
  • Difficult to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is rare, improving the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: Displays a timeline of substance use, not just latest incidents.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be identified in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is often costlier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites found in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
