Accredited Drug Testing in Comer, Georgia offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services. Our speciality lies in hair drug and alcohol tests, available nationwide. A hair sample of 1.5 to 2 inches is needed, either from the head or body. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG and offer other customized options.

The hair follicle drug test has gained prevalence recently as a reliable method for drug testing. Employers, courts, and professionals often choose this over urine tests due to its extended detection window of up to 90 days, difficultness to fake, and use in observed collections. However, for recent drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. By obtaining samples close to the scalp, it is possible to achieve roughly a three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, tough to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (around the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp offers 100mg of hair, representing the prime sample quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional markers, and/or panels exceeding ten, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is suggested to measure the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all alternate hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in the lab processing of a drug test outcome consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary integration of a specimen into the lab's system. This step involves ensuring the sample's seal and shipment integrity, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in additional data entry, if not already included via an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening signifies an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Though it's an economical strategy for negating drug use in most specimens, a positive result requires confirmation to be credible in legal settings. Samples showing potential positivity during Screening necessitate secondary verification.

If a sample indicates a probable positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. Drugs are then extracted from hair at lower concentrations than other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug analysis poses the greatest challenge.

Verification of any positive screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if required. Every step from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and certified to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests uncover drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a brief detection span.
  • High accuracy: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical pattern insight: It reveals a drug use trend over substantial periods, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become noticeable in hair in about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests incur greater costs than alternate drug testing approaches.
  • Inconsistent results: Variations in hair pigment and personal hair growth rates can affect drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests", they inspect the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
