In Denton, Georgia, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations. Need a hair-based substance or alcohol test? Our specialty is within hair assessments with centers across Nationwide cities to conduct these evaluations. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized purposes.

Recently, hair follicle assessments have become increasingly favored for drug testing. A number of employers, legal entities, and substance professionals now request hair evaluations over urine analysis. Hair tests serve employers adhering to strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers. These tests offer the advantage of a larger drug detection period—normally up to 90 days, with supervised collections and strong resistance to tampering. For substance use within 5 days, urine tests maintain superior accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluation has become recognized as an effective method for identifying usage of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by encasing biomarkers within the growth fibers of the hair strand. When taken close to the scalp, hair can provide roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising about 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, serving as the perfect quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it refers solely to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core four steps in the laboratory handling of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab’s process. This involves confirming that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not covered by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening involves an initial, speedy evaluation for substance misuse. While Screening is cost-efficient for dismissing drug presence in most samples, a positive result requires further confirmation for legal admissibility. Any screening samples indicating presumptive positives must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and processed for Extraction. Here, substances are extracted from hair at much reduced concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing poses the greatest challenge.

Verification of any positive Screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Verification is evaluated per both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 guidelines.

Perks of hair drug screening:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug evaluations can track drug utilization for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine reviews which possess a briefer detection period.
  • Toughness to deceive: Cheating a hair drug evaluation is exceedingly challenging, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Historical data availability: It supplies a drug usage pattern over time, beyond recent consumption.

Constraints:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations generally incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair shade and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: While occasionally called "hair follicle evaluations", the test itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
