Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments throughout Devereux, Georgia. For those requiring a hair-based drug or alcohol evaluation, our specialty in follicle analysis ensures dependable service at all our testing facilities nationwide. Suitable hair lengths span 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body. These tests effectively screen for drug, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other substances.

Recently, hair follicle drug screenings have gained prominence in testing protocols. Various employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals prefer hair tests over traditional urine analyses. Hair follicle evaluations are integral for zero-tolerance employers, legal systems, and those on probation. Their advantage lies in their extended detection capability of up to 90 days, a process marked by supervised collection, leaving minimal room for manipulation. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for recent usage detection within a five-day span.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting both drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of drug and alcohol use by capturing biomarkers in the hair strand fibers as they grow. When hair is taken from near the scalp, it can provide a detection timeframe of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 strands (similar to a #2 pencil's diameter), cut close to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the perfect amount for screening and confirmed testing. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is advised. It's best to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we only mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair categories (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes the following four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s database. This procedure confirms the sample's seal and shipping integrity, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data not available from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary, rapid test for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an affordable approach to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive result must be verified for it to be legally permissible. Samples that are initially positive during Screening require additional verification.

When a sample is initially positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the primary sample and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than those found in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), emphasizing why hair drug screening is one of the most challenging techniques.

To verify any positive Screening outcomes, methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are employed. All initial positive samples are cleansed before verification if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenge to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Historical insight: It reveals a timeline of drug usage, not only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs take 5-7 days to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result discrepancies: Factors like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Devereux, GA, comes down to superior detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair follicle assessments offer longer detection windows, capturing substance history over months rather than days. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
