Within Dixie, Georgia, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If your needs include a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities available nationwide to perform this service. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the scalp or body. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent as a method for detecting substance use. This testing method is preferred by employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts over traditional urine tests. It is particularly utilized by employers maintaining strict no-drug policies, legal entities, and probation officers. The key advantage is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, with supervised sample collection, making tampering nearly impossible. Yet, for detecting very recent drug use within five days, urine tests maintain their accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows, hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and drug use. When samples are taken near the scalp, they can reveal a history of alcohol and drug use over a period of up to roughly 90 days. Collection is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and transportation is hassle-free.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hairs (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for both initial tests and confirmations. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, a 150mg sample is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample's weight using a jeweler's scale. If there isn’t enough scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four key phases in lab processing for a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial sample processing into a lab's system, which includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a rapid preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective approach for most samples, yielding a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening need subsequent confirmation.

If a specimen is presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is retrieved from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from the hair at much lower concentrations than other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Positive screening results are verified through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can indicate drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have briefer detection periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: Tampering with a hair drug test is very difficult, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a drug use timeline over a span, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Fails to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are commonly pricier than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the presence of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Even though often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis involves the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Dixie, GA, hair follicle testing leads over urine testing when it comes to detecting substance use. Its accuracy and reliability in pinpointing drug history distinguish it significantly.

Hair testing provides a broader detection window, leaving traditional urine tests behind with its capacity to uncover substance use history up to 90 days compared to mere days.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing excels due to an extended detection window, observing drug use over a much longer timespan, up to 90 days. This feature allows employers more insight than other testing methods.

Employers in Dixie, GA, benefit from a comprehensive view of an employee or applicant's drug history, providing vital data for informed decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Dixie, GA, offers a tamper-resistant method that considerably reduces chances of sample adulteration. This testing guarantees results that are both reliable and unquestionable.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
