Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Doerun, Georgia. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing with testing facilities across all cities Nationwide. To conduct a hair test, you need to have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your scalp or body. Hair analysis can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing options.

In recent years, conducting drug tests has increasingly involved hair follicle drug testing. Various employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are preferred by employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation officers. One major advantage of hair follicle drug testing is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, performed under supervision, making it highly foolproof. Nonetheless, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, the urine test remains supreme.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug exposure by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. Collected near the scalp, hair offers up to a roughly 3-month time frame for identifying alcohol and drug use. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to send.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of approximately 200 hairs (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and for tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample is suggested. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary integration of a sample into a lab's system. This step checks that the sample is sealed and transported correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplemental data input absent from an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening provides a preliminary scan for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical means to exclude drug use in most samples, a confirmed positive result is needed for legal admissibility. Samples presumed positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample indicates positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair with a lower concentration than methods like urine or oral fluid, which is why hair drug testing is the most challenging method to conduct.

Verification of any positive Screening outcome is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleaned prior to confirmation as required. The complete lab sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 guidelines.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to tamper with: It is exceedingly hard to circumvent a hair drug test, making the findings more dependable.
  • Offers historical insights: It shows a trend of drug use across time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Detection of drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days to manifest.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug screening techniques.
  • Result disparities: Variances like hair color and individual growth patterns can influence the level of drug residues in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
