Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Doyle, Georgia. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, our centers in every major city Nationwide can perform these tests. You generally require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. Our hair tests can analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other needs.

In current times, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly common in the process of drug screening. Various employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts choose hair drug tests over traditional urine methods. Organizations with strict no-drug policies, as well as legal entities and probation services, use these tests. One major advantage of hair follicle tests is their longer drug detection time—up to 90 days, with an observed collection method, and almost cheat-proof. However, to accurately detect recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the best option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely regarded as an effective method for spotting drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a comprehensive timeline of usage by capturing biomarkers within the hair shaft as it grows. When cut close to the scalp, hair tests can reveal alcohol and drug presence for up to roughly 90 days. Collecting hair is straightforward, presenting challenges to tampering, and is easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil), taken nearest to the scalp provides around 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional checks, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn’t present, a comparable volume of body hair can be utilized. Head hair specifically refers to scalp strands, while body hair pertains to all other types (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result encompasses four fundamental stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves entering the sample into the lab’s system, which includes the verification of proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional required data entry not provided by an existing electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary check for drug abuse. While it's an economical way to dismiss drug use in most cases, a positive result from Screening needs further validation to be court-admissible. Samples indicating presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample appear positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral swabs), making hair drug testing one of the more complex methodologies.

Positive screens are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Samples showing presumptive positivity are cleaned before confirmation if required. The full laboratory protocol from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, a longer period than urine tests.
  • Cheating is challenging: It's immensely difficult to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring high result accuracy.
  • Gives usage history: It offers insights into drug use patterns over time, in contrast to only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically costs more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite commonly being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
