Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in East Dublin, Georgia. When in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is your hair testing specialist, boasting nationwide centers ready to conduct such tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is typically required. Hair analysis can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing solutions.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly rely on hair follicle tests. Many employers, judiciary bodies, and substance abuse professionals now prefer these over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests serve employers with strict drug policies, courts, and those on probation. The key advantage is an extended drug detection period—up to 90 days—with a supervised collection process, making it nearly foolproof. For drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as a potent asset, hair testing serves in identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug activities by capturing biomarkers within its growing fibers. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers a detection timeframe that can stretch up to around three months for substances. Collection of hair is effortless, hard to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, approximately 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil), from the scalp provides around 100mg, which is the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG add-ons or tests that exceed 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advised. We advise using a jeweler's scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair is insufficient, an equivalent amount of body hair can be utilized. In the context of head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair denotes other types of hair (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The four key steps in laboratory drug test processing comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary integration of a sample within a lab's system. It involves ensuring the sample is correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data input not captured by a digital chain of custody system.

Screening entails a swift preliminary evaluation for drug abuse. Screening is a cost-efficient method for dismissing drug presence in most samples, yet a positive screening must be verified to hold legal weight. Samples that appear positive during screening necessitate further confirmation.

In cases where a screening result signals positivity, additional hair from the original specimen is prepared for the Extraction stage. During Extraction, substances are removed from hair at substantially reduced concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug testing.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation using techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumed positive samples are cleansed before confirmation, if needed. The comprehensive lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is subject to scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is compliant with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a limited timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is immensely challenging, enhancing accuracy.
  • Offers historical perspective: It supplies a usage pattern over time, not just recent usage data.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify immediate use: Typically, it takes 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and individual hair growth patterns can influence how drug metabolites present in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests," this test specifically examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
