Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in East Echols, Georgia. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, we specialize in hair testing, providing centers throughout all cities Nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is used for analysis, testing for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offering other tailored options.

Lately, the hair follicle drug test method is increasingly common in drug testing. Various employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are ideal for employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, or probation programs due to their extended detection period of up to 90 days, ensured collection integrity, and difficulty to falsify. However, for recent consumption within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluations have emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended historical perspective on drug and alcohol use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When taken from near the scalp, hair can indicate alcohol and drug use for up to nearly a 3-month period. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches containing roughly 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is recommended to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be taken. When mentioning head hair, it refers strictly to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of initially inputting a sample into a laboratory’s database. This process includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to negate drug use for the majority of samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening necessitate an additional confirmation.

When a sample shows presumptive positivity during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for Preparation for Extraction. This stage involves recovering drugs from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening one of the most complex methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is remarkably difficult, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Historical usage data: It provides a pattern of drug usage over a timeframe, beyond recent usage alone.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result inconsistencies: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
