Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests right here in East Ellijay, Georgia. Whether it’s for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair analysis and our extensive network of testing centers nationwide ensures seamless access. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is adequate on the scalp or body for the procedure. Our hair tests cater to drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific testing needs.

The popularity of hair follicle drug testing has surged recently, often supplanting traditional urine tests. Employers, judicial entities, and substance abuse experts increasingly prefer hair testing due to stringent drug policies or legal requirements. The extended detection window of up to 90 days, coupled with its nearly tamper-proof nature, offers a significant advantage. Yet, for identifying drug use in the previous 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for spotting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of intoxicants by embedding biomarkers within the developing hair shaft. When cut close to the scalp, hair offers around a 3-month detection span for alcohol and other intoxicants. Hair is straightforward to collect, difficult to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch collection of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assays exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent portion of body hair can be obtained. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Summary of Procedure

The key phases in the lab handling of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab’s system. This process confirms that the sample was sealed and delivered correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient strategy to negate drug utilization for most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be valid in legal settings. Any samples tentatively positive in Screening necessitate an additional confirmation.

If a sample is tentatively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration than in alternative procedures (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most intricate methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples believed to be positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection span: Hair drug tests can reveal drug consumption for up to 90 days, contrasted with urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: It is exceedingly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Delivers historical insights: It can demonstrate a pattern of substance use over a period, rather than just recent usage.

Downsides:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Discrepancies in results: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug remnants in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair shaft and not the hair root below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

East Ellijay, GA, sees hair follicle testing as superior due to its advanced drug detection capabilities compared to urine testing. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
