Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle substance screening in Edgehill, Georgia. If a hair-based drug or alcohol analysis is required, our specialty is hair testing, and we boast a network of testing locations across all cities Nationwide that can carry out this analysis. Typically, a sample of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffices. Hair analysis detects drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offers tailored testing solutions.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug screening has become a more common methodology for drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are favoring hair drug screening over standard urine analysis. Hair tests cater to employers with strict no-drug-use policies, the judiciary, and individuals under probation. The primary advantage is its extended detection span of up to 90 days, gathered through direct observation, making it nearly cheat-proof. Nevertheless, for detecting recent substance use, within 5 days, urine tests remain unsurpassed.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair maintains an extended history of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand fibers. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers a nearly 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of around 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil), cut closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, the optimum sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar volume of body hair can be collected. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. In contrast, body hair includes all other hair types (facial, armpit, etc.).

Procedure Summary

The laboratory drug test result processing encompasses four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This stage ensures that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any auxiliary data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is cost-effective for negating drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court acceptability. Presumptive positive samples in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample prove presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. This step involves retrieving drugs from hair at far lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening presents more challenges than other methodologies.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods confirm any positive screening result. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Pros of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, compared to the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides longitudinal data: It offers a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent activity.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become visible in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can affect drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", these tests assess the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
