Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests across Floyd, Georgia. Experts in hair testing, we provide centers nationwide capable of performing these tests. Test subjects typically need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body for an accurate analysis. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other substances.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method of screening for substances. Many employers, legal systems, and professionals in substance abuse treatment now prefer these over traditional urine tests. They are favored for zero-tolerance policies, offering a longer detection time up to 90 days and are nearly impossible to manipulate. While they excel in detecting long-term use, urine tests remain best for recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Considered a robust method, hair testing effectively reveals drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the hair’s growing fibers, hair offers a prolonged timeline for tracing alcohol and drug usage. Collected near the scalp, hair samples can provide a detection period stretching up to roughly 90 days for various substances. The collection process is straightforward, the samples are somewhat resistant to tampering, and they are easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) from the scalp generates 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary testing, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, 150mg is preferable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is advised. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair includes types like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory processing encompasses these four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, samples are initially integrated into the laboratory system. This phase entails ensuring proper sealing and shipment, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and entering any required data not completed via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary, efficient assessment for substance misuse. While it’s a cost-saving method for most samples, a positive finding in the screen requires subsequent confirmation to stand in legal scenarios. Samples testing positive in Screening mandate additional confirmation.

For samples flagged in the Screening stage, more hair from the original sample undergoes Extraction, wherein drugs are drawn from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods like urine or oral samples, marking hair drug screening as particularly challenging to execute.

Positive findings in Screening undergo Confirmation using methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All positive samples are cleaned before confirmation according to needs. The processing sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation experiences comprehensive review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair tests can show drug usage up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection spans of urine tests.
  • Challenging to manipulate: The difficulty in tampering with hair tests ensures more precise outcomes.
  • Historical usage insights: These tests offer a historical perspective of drug consumption over time rather than indicating recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapacity to detect recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Price: Hair tests tend to be costlier than other testing avenues.
  • Result variabilities: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", these tests evaluate the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
