Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Fort Benning South, Georgia. If you're looking for a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, our expertise is in hair testing, and we operate facilities nationwide to carry out these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is sufficient. These tests identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to specific hair testing preferences.

Recently, hair follicle drug assessments have become a more common approach in drug testing. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists now often prefer this over traditional urine analyses. Such hair tests support organizations with zero-tolerance stances on substance use and are utilized by courts and probation services. Their advantage lies in a drug detection duration of up to 90 days, during a monitored process, making them highly resistant to manipulation. Yet, for identifying recent drug use within five days, urine testing remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. By embedding biomarkers within the growing hair strand fibers, hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake. When taken near the scalp, hair can yield a detection timeframe of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. It's easy to acquire, moderately challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample containing roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the girth of a #2 pencil) from the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or those surpassing 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing for a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the initial step of integrating a sample into the laboratory's protocol. This procedure verifies the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and incorporates any extra data input absent in an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening provides a budget-friendly approach to exclude drug use for most samples, any positive results need confirmation for court validity. Samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening mandate a secondary verification.

In case a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are withdrawn from hair at concentrations much lower than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of a positive result involves GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. As needed, all presumptively positive samples undergo a wash before confirmation. The full laboratory workflow, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 guidelines.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing is capable of identifying drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection window of urine tests.
  • Challenge to falsify: The integrity of a hair drug test is tough to compromise, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It offers an overview of drug consumption patterns over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • No recent use detection: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair color differences and individual hair growth rates may influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests," the procedure evaluates the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Fort Benning South, GA.

Hair follicle testing offers a more reliable detection method as compared to urine testing. Hair tests provide a wider window of detection that spans approximately 90 days, far surpassing the limited detection period of urine tests. This makes hair testing a superior choice for employers seeking comprehensive insight into an individual’s substance use history.

Unlike traditional urine tests susceptible to tampering, hair testing in Fort Benning South ensures accuracy and reliability. With the ability to trace a variety of substances over an extended timeline, hair tests are invaluable for maintaining workplace safety and integrity. There's little room for evasion or manipulation, offering substantial peace of mind.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
