In Fort Stewart, Georgia, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you're in need of conducting a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is the expert in this field, with facilities across the nation equipped to administer hair tests. Typically, hair samples of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body are sufficient. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in drug screenings. It's favored by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists, as they increasingly opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Organizations with no drug tolerance, legal entities, and probation supervision individuals benefit significantly from this method. The chief advantage lies in hair testing’s extensive detection window, which spans up to 90 days, collected under supervision and hard to falsify. Nonetheless, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive history of alcohol and various drugs by trapping biomarkers within the growing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and effortlessly shipped.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for analysis and confirmation. When dealing with EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, it is advisable to use 150mg of the sample. It's recommended to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be acquired. In reference to head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the laboratory handling of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a specimen into a laboratory’s system. This process confirms that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data entry that isn’t provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient way to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for it to be permissible in court. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and set for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a concentration much lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to ninety days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenges in deception: It's quite challenging to cheat a hair drug test, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical insights: It can showcase a pattern of drug consumption over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to spot recent usage: It takes around five to seven days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: While commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair strand and not the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
