Accredited Drug Testing offers complete hair follicle drug testing services in Fort Valley, Georgia. For those in need of a hair or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing spans nationwide locations. Typically, hair length of 1.5-2 inches from the crown or body is needed. We provide analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and custom hair testing options.

Hair follicle testing has increasingly become a preferred method for drug testing in recent years. It's often required by employers with zero-tolerance policies, the judiciary, and substance abuse professionals, replacing traditional urine tests. The key advantage is its extended detection period—up to 90 days. Collected under supervision, hair tests are nearly impossible to falsify, although urine tests are more accurate for drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have emerged as a significant method for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair acts as a record over time for alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers in the structure of a growing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair samples can identify alcohol and other substances for a time frame of up to about three months. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, approximately 200 hair strands (around the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, contains 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for analysis and confirmation. For EtG expansions and/or assessments over 10 panels, a recommended amount is 150mg of the sample. It's advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair cannot be collected, an equal portion of body hair is suitable. Regarding head hair, it strictly refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process in the lab for evaluating a drug test result consists of four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the first phase of registering a sample in a lab’s database, which includes checking that the sample is properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any extra information missing in an electronic chain of custody platform.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drugs of misuse. Although Screening is cost-effective for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legal in court. Any presumptively positive samples in Screening must also undergo a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptively positive in the Screening phase, a section of hair is extracted from the initial sample and set for Extraction. In this phase, substances are drawn out from hair in much smaller amounts compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive from screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory progression from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a briefer detection period.
  • Hardly possible to falsify: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a history of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent consumption: Drugs need around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments usually are pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Considerations like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", this analysis actually examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
