Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Garfield, Georgia. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, and we have facilities nationwide, including Garfield, to accommodate hair tests. Typically, hair from the crown or body measuring 1.5 to 2 inches is required. These tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized substances as requested.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become a common choice for drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse counselors often prefer this method over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle testing is favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies and is widely used by courts and in probation settings. The primary advantage is its extended detection ability, spanning up to 90 days. The test is conducted under direct supervision, making tampering near impossible. However, for recent drug use detection within a 5-day window, urine testing remains more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair, it offers a detailed history of substance use. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal a usage pattern for alcohol and drugs up to roughly three months. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A section measuring 1.5 inches containing about 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in size) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the best sample for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests beyond 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement. When scalp hair is absent, equivalent body hair can be collected. Head hair denotes scalp hair exclusively. Body hair refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test is divided into four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step checks that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. While economically advantageous for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples testing presumptively positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

Should a sample test positive initially, more hair is drawn from the original batch for the Extraction step. Drugs are then isolated from hair at a much lower concentration in this stage than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening the most complex method to perform.

Confirmed positive screening results are achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives are washed pre-confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use extending up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: The difficulty of evading a hair drug test makes the results more reliable.
  • Provides historical data: Allows insight into drug use patterns over time rather than only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detection of drugs in hair requires approximately 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Typically, hair drug tests incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually involves the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
