Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Glen Haven, Georgia. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our expertise and testing centers span all cities nationwide. To qualify, you typically need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide tailored testing solutions.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have become a staple over traditional methods. Many employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer this over urine tests. These tests cater to employers with zero-tolerance policies, the judicial system, and those on probation. A key advantage is a detection window up to 90 days, while collection is monitored, minimizing test manipulation. For recent drug use, under 5 days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessment has emerged as a robust instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair stores a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When taken close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's width) cut near the scalp provides approximately 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for examination and verification. For EtG, supplementary, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the hair is advisable. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is missing, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a drug test in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample in a laboratory's system. This step involves confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry that the electronic chain of custody system does not cover.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. While Screening is an economical method to eliminate substance usage in the bulk of samples, any positive result requires confirmation for legal acceptance. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening must undergo a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. Here, substances are isolated from the hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Required presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation. The complete lab sequence, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is inspected by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair label and certification to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug exams can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have briefer detection periods.
  • High resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug exam is quite challenging, bolstering result precision.
  • Provides past usage data: It reveals a usage trend over time, not limited to recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Drugs generally become detectable in hair about 5-7 days post-use.
  • Price: Hair drug exams typically incur higher costs compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair pigmentation and personal hair growth differences may influence metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the focus of analysis is the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Glen Haven, GA, hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing in several ways. Hair testing offers superior accuracy and reliability, detecting a wide range of substances. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair samples provide a longer detection window, giving a comprehensive view of drug use. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
