Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Godfrey, Georgia. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in this method and have testing centers across all cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is necessary. Hair samples can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug screening. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are favored for zero-tolerance policies by employers, courts, and probation cases due to their extended detection period, often up to 90 days. They are collected with supervision, making them challenging to manipulate. However, for detecting usage within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a repository for a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a timeframe of up to around 3 months for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, an ideal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a corresponding amount of body hair may be utilized. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, and others).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary handling of a sample in a laboratory’s system. This process encompasses verifying the secure sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid check for substance abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective way to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be courtroom admissible. Samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening need a second confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen and set up for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair in considerably lower concentrations than in other techniques (such as urine or oral fluids), which explains why hair drug testing remains the most intricate methodology to undertake.

The Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The whole laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and meets ISO / IEC 17025 standards for accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can provide a history of drug usage over a duration of time, not only recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: A timeframe of approximately 5-7 days is required for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically more costly compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When considering drug testing options in Godfrey, GA, hair follicle tests outshine urine tests with their superior accuracy and reliability. Hair tests provide a longer detection window, offering a clearer picture of an individual's substance use over time compared to traditional urine methods.Accuracy is further enhanced by the difficulty in altering hair samples, ensuring trustworthy results.

Extended Detection Window

One of the key advantages of hair follicle testing in Godfrey, GA, is its extended detection window. Unlike traditional testing methods, hair analysis can detect drug usage for up to 90 days prior, offering employers a comprehensive overview of someone’s substance history. This extended period allows for a more complete assessment of an applicant or employee’s past behaviors.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Godfrey, GA, is a tamper-resistant method that significantly lowers the possibility of sample adulteration. Its secure process ensures reliable results, preventing any manipulation of the sample. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
