Comprehensive hair follicle drug testing is offered by Accredited Drug Testing in Gracewood, Georgia. Should you require a hair or alcohol test, our centers nationwide, including in all metropolitan areas, provide specialized hair testing services. Generally, testing necessitates 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. Results can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other hair testing needs.

Hair follicle tests have become increasingly prevalent in drug testing processes in recent years. Various organizations, including employers, courts, and substance abuse experts, now prefer hair tests over urine tests. This method is favored for its longer detection window, closely monitored collection, and relative immunity to tampering. However, for recent drug use (within 5 days), urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol use. Hair captures a long-term record of drug and alcohol usage by embedding biomarkers into its strands. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to about 90 days. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of nearly 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for evaluation. For EtG, add-ons, or over 10-panel tests, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, the equivalent volume of body hair can be used. Head hair pertains only to scalp hair, while body hair includes other types (such as facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in laboratory processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initializing of a sample in a lab's system. This step ensures that the sample was correctly sealed and sent, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening entails an initial quick examination for drugs of abuse. Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage in most samples; however, a positive screen needs verification to be court-admissible. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positives during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at far lower concentrations than with other methods (such as urine or saliva), making hair drug testing exceptionally challenging.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcomes is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed if necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is regulated under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have shorter detection capabilities.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Records patterns: It can indicate a trend of drug usage over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take about 5 to 7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other testing approaches.
  • Variations in findings: Hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests", this test evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
