Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug screening in Graham, Georgia. When you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair evaluations, with facilities nationwide equipped to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Hair exams can detect substances, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have grown in popularity for substance screening. They are often preferred by employers, legal authorities, and addiction specialists over traditional urine tests. Businesses with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers use hair tests, benefiting from a longer detection window of up to 90 days, an observed collection, and limited opportunity for tampering. That being said, for the detection of drugs within the last five days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a powerful method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair provides an extended history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When taken near the scalp, a hair sample can offer a detection period of up to around 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to send.

A sample size of 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests over 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for measurement. If scalp hair can't be collected, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. "Head hair" means scalp hair only, while "body hair" includes other types like facial or armpit hair.

Process Overview

The main steps in processing a drug test sample in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the lab's system, which includes confirming the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, providing a random LAN (Lab Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a quick initial check for substances. While it offers a cost-effective way to rule out drug use for most samples, a confirmed positive screen is required for it to be legally valid. Any samples that test positive in the initial Screening must undergo further Confirmation.

Should a sample test positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for the Extraction phase. During this phase, drugs are isolated from the hair at much lower concentrations than with other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing particularly challenging.

Confirmation of initial positive results is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned before final confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug screening can trace drug use for up to 3 months, unlike urine tests that cover a shorter duration.
  • High resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair test is quite difficult, making results more reliable.
  • Historical usage patterns: It provides a timeline of substance usage, instead of just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally costs more than other testing methodologies.
  • Results variability: Factors like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: The test often misnamed "hair follicle test" actually analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
