Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Greens Cut, Georgia. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, they specialize in hair testing and operate testing centers across various cities Nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from one's head or body can be used. These hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to specific testing needs.

The trend in drug testing has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle drug tests in recent years. This method is preferred by several employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists over the conventional urine test. Employers implementing zero-tolerance drug policies, as well as courts and probationers, often opt for hair follicle testing. One significant advantage is its extended detection period, often up to 90 days, while being difficult to adulterate. However, for drug use detection in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol use. This method captures a long-term history of substance use by entrapping biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When acquired near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timeline of up to roughly 3 months for drugs and alcohol. It is easy to gather, challenging to falsify, and straightforward to transport.

An ideal 1.5-inch sample, approximately 200 strands of hair in volume (akin to the size of a #2 pencil), closest to the scalp provides around 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For additional tests, like EtG, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accurate weighing. If scalp hair is not an option, a comparable amount of body hair can be utilized. When we reference head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair kinds (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for a drug test result comprises four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial processing of the sample within the lab system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for illicit drugs. Although it is a cost-efficient method for ruling out drug use in most cases, any positive findings need to be verified to be valid in a legal context. Presumptive positives from Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If the Screening phase indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is more challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive results from screening is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a limited detection period.
  • Enhanced test integrity: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, resulting in more accurate outcomes.
  • Historical insights: It reveals a drug usage trend over time, unlike current consumption alone.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative drug test methods.
  • Outcome variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: The commonly termed "hair follicle tests" actually examine the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
