In Hagan, Georgia, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services. Should you require drug or alcohol testing through hair samples, our specialization in this method is complemented by a vast network of testing centers in every city Nationwide. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is sufficient, with analysis available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, the hair follicle method has become increasingly prevalent in drug testing processes. Many employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse experts are now opting for hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. Such tests serve organizations with strict anti-drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals under probation. Hair follicle tests offer the key advantage of detecting drug use over approximately 90 days, utilizing a supervised collection process that is exceptionally resistant to manipulation. However, for detecting recent drug use under five days, urine tests remain the most precise choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination has emerged as an effective instrument for spotting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When gathered near to the scalp, hair can offer up to an estimated 3-month detection window for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, moderately difficult to tamper with, and uncomplicated to ship.

A 1.5-inch portion of about 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the ideal specimen for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Overview of Process

The four principal steps in lab processing of a drug test result incorporate Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary handling of a specimen within a lab’s system. This procedure verifies that the specimen was suitably sealed and dispatched, grants a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial fast assessment for substance misuse. Though Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be validated to be valid in court. Samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a secondary authentication.

If a specimen shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing prior to confirmation if needed. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in line with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can discern drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection range.
  • Hard to tamper with: Manipulating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, rendering the results more reliable.
  • Offers historical data: It can reveal a pattern of substance use over time, not merely recent use.

Constraints:

  • Incapability to detect recent use: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result discrepancies: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the examination itself assesses the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing stands out over traditional urine tests in Hagan, GA due to its superior accuracy in detecting long-term substance use. Unlike urine tests, which are limited to recent consumption, hair tests provide a comprehensive view, offering invaluable insight and reliability for employers enforcing strict drug policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
