In Hardwick, GA, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug examinations. Our specialty is hair testing, with centers nationwide, including all cities, for drug or alcohol analysis using hair samples. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. We offer customized testing for drugs or alcohol/ETG.

Hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing approaches. Many employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer this over urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers often use it due to the longer detection period, up to 90 days, meticulously observed collection process, and high resistance to tampering, although urine tests remain most accurate for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has increasingly gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers, providing a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can offer a detection window of up to about three months for these substances. The collection process is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and shipping is uncomplicated.

A sample of 1.5 inches, comprising approximately 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp, yields around 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advised. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. In cases where scalp hair is not available, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. When we refer to head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Drug test result processing in a laboratory consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is integrated into a laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplemental data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While it's an affordable way to discard drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal acceptance. Any samples with presumptive positives in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample yields a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this step, drugs are isolated from hair at a concentration much lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening presents the most complexity among methodologies.

Confirming any positive results from Screening is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that show presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory process, encompassing Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to the standards of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation under ISO/IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection window of urine tests.
  • Difficulty in evading detection: Hair drug tests are challenging to cheat, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Historical usage indication: These tests can demonstrate a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Detection of drugs in hair typically takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
