Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing in Homeland, Georgia. When a hair drug or alcohol test is necessary, our centers, spread across numerous cities nationwide, can proficiently perform the test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used. These tests offer analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

Of late, the popularity of hair follicle drug testing has climbed, with more employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts preferring it over traditional urine tests. Ideal for workplaces with a zero-tolerance policy, hair tests present an extended detection duration, usually up to 90 days, are conducted in a monitored setting, and are nearly unalterable. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests still hold precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluations have emerged as a significant method to detect drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can capture and preserve the indicators of alcohol and drugs within its fibers over time, offering an extended history of substance use. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer insights into alcohol and drug use for a detection period of up to three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for transport.

A sample of hair measuring 1.5 inches, composed of approximately 200 strands (comparable in thickness to a #2 pencil), closest to the scalp, provides about 100mg, which is ideal for initial screenings and confirmations. For tests involving EtG, additional panels, or exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to ensure accurate weighing. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair is permissible. When discussing head hair, we solely refer to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the process of incorporating a sample into a laboratory’s database. This step involves confirming the proper sealing and dispatch of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic custody system.

Screening acts as an initial assessment for potential drug abuse. It serves as an economical approach to rule out drug use in most samples, yet a positive result in Screening necessitates confirmation to be legally acceptable. Any initial positive findings in Screening mandate additional confirmation.

If the Screening phase suggests a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the collected specimen and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, substances are extracted from hair in concentrations significantly lower than in other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluids), highlighting hair drug testing as a challenging process.

Verification of any positive screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples are cleansed as needed before confirmation. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated in accordance with both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation under ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Unlike urine tests with shorter periods, hair drug evaluations can detect usage for up to 90 days.
  • Low likelihood of manipulation: Manipulation of hair drug tests is quite challenging, hence results tend to be more reliable.
  • Reflects historical usage: Provides a timeline of drug consumption beyond immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent consumption: It typically takes between 5-7 days for substances to become apparent in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations generally incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like the color of hair and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
