Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Horns, Georgia. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, we specialize in this domain and operate testing centers across all cities Nationwide that can facilitate a hair test. Generally, samples require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. Hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized testing options.

Recently, the approach to conducting drug tests has increasingly included the hair follicle drug test. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests serve organizations abiding by zero-tolerance drug use policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation. The key advantage is a longer detection window, spanning up to 90 days. It is collected under supervision and is nearly infallible. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a prolonged account of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When cut near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use for up to about a three-month timeframe. This method is straightforward for collection, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch piece, consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp equates to 100mg—ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding ten, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measurement. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. References to head hair denote only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types, like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the lab processing of drug tests include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is logged into a lab's system. It ensures the sample was sealed and transported securely, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result from Screening must be verified to be valid in legal proceedings. Any samples with presumptive positives in Screening require additional confirmation.

If a presumptive positive is found during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for further analysis in the Extraction phase. In this step, substances are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the technical challenges of hair drug screening.

Verification of positive screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and conforms to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug screenings can uncover drug use over a 90-day span, unlike urine tests, which feature a narrower detection period.
  • Difficulty to tamper: It is exceedingly hard to manipulate a hair drug test, thus enhancing accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: It can showcase a timeline of drug use, rather than merely indicating recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detectable drug traces take approximately 5-7 days to manifest in hair strands.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternate drug testing approaches.
  • Variability in results: Hair color and personal differences in hair growth may impact drug metabolite levels within hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the process involves analyzing the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
