Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Howard, Georgia. If you need a hair or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in this area, with centers in all cities nationwide capable of conducting a hair test. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body is typically required. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other customized hair testing solutions.

In recent years, the preference for drug testing methods has shifted towards hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer these over the typical urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are implemented by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation programs. The key advantage of these tests is their ability to detect drugs over an extended period, up to 90 days, while being conducted under observation, making them nearly impossible to tamper with. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most reliable for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as a significant method for uncovering drug and alcohol use. Hair provides an extended timeline of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide up to roughly a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplemental tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When referring to head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the first stage of processing a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step includes verifying that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data required beyond an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for the presence of drugs. While Screening serves as a cost-efficient method to rule out drug usage for most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be admissible in court. Any samples that are presumptively positive during Screening mandate an additional confirmation process.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which possess a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to circumvent: It is very challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides historical insight: It can outline a pattern of drug use over an extended period, rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Costly: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Choosing hair over urine testing in Howard, GA, offers clearer benefits. Hair tests display superior detection accuracy and reliability that urine tests may lack, providing a thorough assessment of drug use.

Enhanced Detection is one of the main advantages. The hair test's adeptness at revealing past substance use is unrivaled, presenting a significant edge over more traditional urine testing methods.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Howard, GA, grants employers an in-depth view of an individual's drug history. Unlike traditional tests, hair testing can disclose drug use over up to 90 days, providing a comprehensive picture.

This longer detection ability allows companies to make informed decisions. It ensures that both current employees and potential hires maintain a drug-free lifestyle over a more extended timeframe.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
