Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Hull, Georgia. Specializing in hair tests for drugs or alcohol, we have facilities nationwide that perform these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from your head or body. Hair analyses can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a popular method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair testing over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by companies with zero-tolerance policies, legal entities, and probation officers due to its extensive detection period of up to 90 days. While precise for recent usage under 5 days, urine tests remain optimal.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has been recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers in a hair strand capture biomarkers, offering a long-term record of substance use. When hair is collected near the scalp, it offers a detection timeframe of up to roughly three months. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness), close to the scalp, yields 100mg, the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. Head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other hair types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial intake of a sample into a lab's system. This step verifies the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any supplementary data entries not recorded in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is an initial examination for the presence of abuse drugs. While Screening is a cost-efficient way to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples testing presumptively positive in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

For samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted at significantly lower concentrations than those in other methods such as urine or oral fluid, exemplifying why hair drug screening is among the most challenging techniques.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation through methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection: Hair drug tests reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair drug tests are tough to cheat, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Shows usage history: Offers a timeline of drug use over time, not limited to recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Undetectable recent use: Drugs generally take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," this test analyzes the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing provides distinct benefits over urine testing in Hull, GA. Its superior detection accuracy allows for a reliable assessment of substance use. Unlike conventional tests, hair analyses minimize false negatives, offering employers and authorities confidence in results.

The increased reliability of hair follicle testing stems from its ability to detect drugs over a longer period, which urine testing cannot match. This ensures comprehensive tracking of substance use behaviors, making it a preferred choice among professionals.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Hull, GA, extends the detection window, offering up to 90 days of drug use history. For employers, this extended window presents a thorough understanding of an individual's substance patterns, surpassing the capabilities of shorter-term tests.

This longer detection period benefits organizations by providing more conclusive results, ensuring more effective assessments of employees or applicants, and granting a full picture of their drug use history.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-resistant by nature, hair follicle tests in Hull, GA, greatly reduce the potential for sample adulteration. This ensures that the results remain reliable and trustworthy, minimizing any attempt to alter outcomes.

Due to the inherent properties of hair samples, the risk of tampering is significantly lower compared to other methods, making it an ideal choice for those requiring unaltered, accurate results in drug testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
