Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug analysis in Ivey, Georgia. When requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, turn to Accredited Drug Testing, your hair testing specialist. We have facilities in every city nationally capable of executing a hair test. The crown of your head must have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, or body hair can be used typically. Hair samples are evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing alternatives.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle tests. More employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts request hair drug tests over conventional urine evaluations. These hair tests are chosen by employers enforcing strict drug-free policies, courtrooms, and probationary programs. A key advantage of this method is its extended drug detection window, extending up to 90 days, performed under strict supervision, and offering high resistance to tampering. However, urine tests still deliver the highest accuracy for recent drug use, up to 5 days prior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair acts as a record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and shipping is uncomplicated.

A 1.5-inch sample containing about 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's suggested to use a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is entered into the lab's system. This process involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary examination for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to eliminate drug use in most samples, any positive results from Screening must be confirmed for court admittance. All samples that are presumptively positive after Screening require confirmation.

If a sample is initially positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the specimen and prepared for Extraction. Within this phase, drugs are detached from hair at a lower concentration than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the hardest method to execute.

Confirming any positive Screening outcome is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumptively positive are washed as necessary before confirmation. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 certification standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably hard, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can outline drug use over time, unlike tests that only indicate recent use.

Limitations:

  • Not for recent use detection: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other test types.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Ivey, GA: Hair testing provides advantages over traditional urine tests primarily due to its superior detection windows and accuracy. Hair tests reveal a broader history of drug use patterns, offering insights unavailable through urine analysis. As a result, organizations enforcing zero-tolerance policies rely on hair testing to uncover genuine substance use.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Ivey, GA: One of the most compelling reasons for choosing hair follicle testing is its extended detection period. This method provides insights into drug usage over the past 90 days, enabling employers to assess long-term behavior patterns rather than just recent substance intake. This comprehensive perspective grants deeper insights into the substance use history of an individual.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Ivey, GA: Hair follicle tests offer a significant advantage in minimizing sample adulteration risks. Testing integrity is preserved due to the inherent properties of hair, making the results dependable and difficult to dispute. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
