Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Jenkinsburg, Georgia. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair analysis, with centers across all U.S. cities equipped to conduct such tests. A requirement is 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head; alternately, body hair is an option. Hair assessments can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and customized choices.

In recent times, drug assessment procedures increasingly incorporate hair follicle evaluations. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now favor hair examinations over routine urine tests. Hair follicle analyses are employed by firms with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and individuals under probation. Their main advantage is the prolonged detection capacity, typically up to 90 days, collected under supervision and nearly immune to tampering. However, for detecting drug use within a recent 5-day time frame, urine tests remain the most reliable option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers in the structure of the growing hair fiber. When samples are taken close to the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches and composed of around 200 strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for testing. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. It is best to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The procedure in laboratory processing for drug test results consists of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the initial sample is processed within a lab’s system. This involves checking that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry that is not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary drug abuse check. Although Screening provides a cost-effective method to rule out drug use in most cases, a positive result needs confirmation to be legally acceptable. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample test positive in Screening, an additional portion of hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening poses a notable challenge.

Confirmation of any positive outcome from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing as part of the confirmation process if needed. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can pick up on drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Resistant to tampering: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Captures longitudinal data: It reflects a pattern of drug consumption over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Detection of drugs in hair takes approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally come at a higher cost compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Inconsistent results: Variabilities such as hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Jenkinsburg, GA

In Jenkinsburg, hair follicle tests have emerged as a superior option when compared to traditional urine testing. One significant advantage is their extended detection window, providing insights into drug use up to 90 days prior. This is a game-changer compared to limited urine tests.
Hair tests also ensure enhanced reliability and accuracy, capturing a broader spectrum of possible substance interactions and ensuring greater confidence in the results.

Another crucial benefit is the almost impossible task of tampering with hair samples once they've been collected. This level of integrity is hard to achieve with urine tests, ensuring superior outcomes in screening.
The robustness, along with accuracy, makes hair follicle testing an invaluable assessment tool for various organizations tasked with maintaining healthy environments.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
