In Juniper, Georgia, Accredited Drug Testing provides all-inclusive hair follicle drug testing. When a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our expertise lies in hair testing with facilities available nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed for an accurate analysis. Our hair tests are adept at identifying drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for specific needs.

Recently, drug testing methodologies favor hair follicle drug tests. Increasingly, employers, courts, and substance abuse experts substitute traditional urine tests with hair-based ones. These tests are used in zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and probation conditions. The major advantage is their ability to detect drug use over a longer span, up to 90 days, utilizing an observed collection method that's hard to manipulate. However, urine tests remain the gold standard for detecting very recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust means for detecting substance use. Hair encapsulates biomarkers, capturing a prolonged history of drug and alcohol use in the growing strands. Sourced near the scalp, hair offers roughly a three-month detection period for both alcohol and drugs. Its collection is straightforward, making it somewhat resistant to tampering and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 strands from near the scalp, equivalent to a #2 pencil, yields 100mg of hair, ideal for initial testing and confirmation. For tests like EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding ten panels, 150mg is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample is advisable. Where scalp hair is absent, a comparable weight of body hair may be used. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the laboratory drug test process are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning begins with processing the sample into the lab's system, ensuring it was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial, rapid check for substance use. Though cost-effective for eliminating drug use in most cases, a positive screen mandates a confirmatory test for legal validity. Any samples presumed positive in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted and prepared for further analysis. Here, drugs are isolated at a much lower concentration than in other methods (such as urine or saliva), making hair drug screening particularly challenging to perform.

Confirmation of positive screenings is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Necessary washing of positive samples occurs prior to confirmation. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is rigorously reviewed under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug tests are difficult to compromise, ensuring reliable results.
  • Historical insight: They reveal patterns of drug use over time, not only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs are typically detectable in hair between 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Individual differences, like hair color and growth rates, can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
