Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Kite, Georgia. Specializing in this method, our centers located across the country can perform these tests efficiently. Generally, a sample with 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is adequate. The tests aim to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for other specific needs.

The preference for hair follicle drug testing has grown, especially among employers with strict drug-free policies, judicial systems, and substance abuse intervention experts. Unlike urine tests, hair follicle tests offer a prolonged detection window up to 90 days. This method is collected under observation, making it almost impossible to tamper with. However, for recent drug intake within five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. When sourced near the scalp, hair can present approximately a 3-month detection window for both alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

Gathering a 1.5-inch segment of 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred sample for screening and verification. For EtG, additional panels, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the sample. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair is permissible. When addressing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four core steps in laboratory drug test processing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step involving the introduction of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This encompasses confirming the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any absent data entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. While screening is a cost-efficient method for eliminating drug usage in most samples, any positive findings require confirmation to be legally permissible in court. Samples that are initially positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

In instances where a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are withdrawn from the hair at concentrations considerably lower than those used in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a particularly challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as needed. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation per ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, compared to urine tests which offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insights: It offers an overview of drug patterns over time, beyond mere recent use.

Limitations:

  • Can't determine recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result discrepancies: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the examination is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
